Smile Movie Review – A Reminder of Putting a Mask Over Our Inner Wounds

Released in 2022, this 115-minute Smile movie is the first horror movie of the year. The film is scary, no doubt, especially the shock horror scenes, which are gruesome and haunting. The movie’s visual scenes are not to disturb the viewer but to propel the narrative.

Written and directed by Parker Finn, the movie stars Sosie Bacon, Jessie T Usher, Kyle Gallner, Robin Weigert, and Caitlin Stasey. Smile horror movie is a good option to watch if you are into the horror genre.

This long-form remake of the award-winning 2020 short film “Laura Hasn’t Slept” reflects on the psychological demons that can engulf even the most stable lives. The Smile movie trailer was promising.

Smile Movie: Plot

The Smile movie 2022 plot starts with Caitlin Stasey, who starred in the original short film and also plays the role of Laura, a distraught woman who suffers from nightmarish visions after having seen one of her college professors die by suicide. Socie Bacon, who plays the character of Rose Cotter, an emergency psychiatrist, tries to help the terrified Laura only to see her stop screaming, smile, and then cut her throat with a broken vase shard.

While trying to deal with the shock, Rose also suffers horrifying visions where she sees bizarre grinning faces appear in dark corners. She becomes convinced some evil force targeted her. She tries to understand and escape this passed-out curse that seems like a familiar narrative in movies such as The Grudge, It Follows, and The Ring.

Smile movie does not try to look like the original, and many scary scenes are straight out of the time-tested genre – a voice on the telephone, a shape in shadow, and an unfortunate pet. All these scenes try to create an uncertain environment.

The Cast

Smile movie 2022 cast has been good. Sosie Bacon, as Rose, excels in the role of a privileged doctor whose own unraveling as a response to the events reflects her painful past, which she cannot shake off. Her relationship dynamics with her elder sister Holly and fiancé Trevor, played by Jessie T Usher, is fraught with pain. None of them could offer her support when she needed them the most. Rose also gets irritated with her therapist, played by the composed Robin Weigert, who does not seem to listen to her woes. Rose finds herself doing the same when Laura accuses her earlier in the Smile movie that she did not listen. Rose’s isolation increases when she is dressed in muted tones in shadow and washed-out surroundings. Her sister, in sharp contrast, wears bright dresses as someone who worked hard to live a life that was not affected by her past.

Conclusion

The director of Smile movie, Parker Finn, uses extreme angles, using upside own shots more often and intimate close-ups of Rose. The director attempt to portray the paranoid, hysterical women who no one believes except for her ex-boyfriend, played by Kyle Gallner. The smile movie is a stinging reminder of how if one wants to be accepted in the border world, then one should put a mask of a smile over their psychological wounds and pretend that everything is fine.
