The Edifier Stax Spirit S3 Offers Great Planar Sound at an Affordable Price

Planar magnetic headphones usually are very costly, but Edifier Stax Spirit S3 headphones provide a reasonably priced, portable alternative. These headphones make many claims, and we are delighted to report that they are justified.

A set of wireless planar magnetic cans that are intended to be light enough, comfortable enough, and portable to be considered an everyday alternative is exactly what Edifier hopes to achieve with the $400 Stax Spirit S3. Can Edifier pull off a spirited surprise for a company that isn’t necessarily recognized for its broad Stax audio expertise, or are they just planar hype?

To learn more, let’s find out Edifier Stax Spirit S3 review.

What’s in the Box of Edifier Headphones?

Although Edifier chooses to go the elegant path with a smooth aesthetic, there is nothing distinctive about the packaging. You receive a lovely clamshell case in the box that contains the headphones. When you open it, you’ll see a pouch on the top half that contains the quick start guide, USB-C charging cable, 1/4-inch adaptor, and 3.5mm cable. You also receive a second set of ear cups that Edifier refers to as “Ice Feeling” due to their fabric inside, which keeps you colder during extended listening sessions.

Design of the Edifier Stax Spirit S3 Headphones

Due to the technology required to create them, planar magnetic headphones are often a little larger. The Stax Spirit S3 cans might be a little thick, but we found they were on par with any other dynamic driver-equipped set. Both pairs of ear cups have excellent cushioning, as we discovered after wearing them for several hours while working.

The right ear cup’s combination multifunction/volume buttons provide all your required functions. The volume controls are used for track skipping, while the multifunction button is used for answering and ending calls and pairing Bluetooth devices. However, that button also offers you other options through the Edifier app.

The inside components are even more impressive than the exterior ones, which are stylish. The Stax Spirit S3 headphones from Edifier use planar magnetic drivers instead of the dynamic ones found in many of the most popular headphones. Dynamic drivers aren’t bad and typically excel in the bass department.

Sound Quality of Edifier Stax Spirit S3

One of the top over-ear headphones we’ve tested in a long time is the Stax Spirit S3. They sound excellent right out of the box, and we were impressed by the amount of detail present in so many different tracks. Most headphones would stress bass over treble to use the low-end qualities dynamic drivers can provide, but planar headphones like these genuinely bring the mids to life.

Everything we heard while listening to the music was evident. These headphones clearly represent how a song should sound by highlighting the bass and mid-notes. If you’re used to bass-heavy headphones, the highs on some tracks can be a little forceful, but we appreciated the well-balanced sound and being able to hear all the subtleties of our favorite music.

Stax Headphone: Battery Life

The battery life of the Stax Spirit S3 is appalling. They never stop moving forward. We can verify that you won’t be charging them very frequently, even though Edifier rates them at up to 80 hours per charge, which is absurd in a good sense. They had only lost 15% of their battery life when we tested them about seven hours later. On the plus side, the headphones support quick charging, so you can get up to 11 hours of listening time by simply plugging them in for 10 minutes.

Conclusion

Edifier deserves praise for producing a fabulous pair of planar magnetic cans. In addition to sounding fantastic, Edifier Stax Spirit S3 also has a cozy feeling. Compared to other wireless cans, the price may appear excessive, but for those seeking the best sound quality, they represent a great value.
