The Northman Reviews:  Dramatic Revenge Delivered with Brutality by Robert Eggers

Here are our movie Northman reviews. The Northman is a violent, almost nightmare depiction of generational retribution. The most heartbreakingly excellent sequence is a chat between the mother of the son who has returned with murder on his mind and the mother who never ultimately grieves the man he is seeking to avenge. Although it is a legend, most spectators will undoubtedly be familiar with the basic plot of Hamlet and The Lion King.

The Northman Rating and Release Date

According to various reviews, aggregator websites’ rating is 3.5/5. It received positive reviews from critics, who praised the film’s director, production values, and performances by Skarsgard and Bang. Despite having a production expenditure of between $70 and $90 million, the movie only made $69 million at the international box office but made money on the VOD and home media markets.

The Northman made its global premiere on March 28, 2022, at the Rigoletto Cinema in Stockholm. In some nations, the film was released on April 13, 2022; in the United States, it was released on April 22.

The Cast of the Movie is Truly Great

A stellar ensemble led by Alexander Skarsgrd, Nicole Kidman, and Anya Taylor-Joy brings the epic story to life. You must watch the movie to find out who else makes an appearance.

Full Northman Movie Review

The Northman has a distinct direction but frequently feels shaky. Its grammar alone is disturbing and weird. The rest of the story mostly reminds you of the oldest vengeance stories in the book: witness son, the contradictory mother, poisoned uncle, etc. Without the aid of CGI or aesthetically pleasing scale, director Eggers, who also helmed the minimalistic The Lighthouse, can infuse this film with a blatantly unique spirit that feels restless due to how lazy and somewhat compassionate it appears. Everything seems natural and comes from a time in human evolution when thinking on one’s feet may have been a way of life. Despite a film that, while brutal, can frequently prod and hang onto the axe, it is intuitive and surprisingly effective.

Northman Ending Explained

Eggers may have overdone it with the violence. Audience members were chuckling at the gruesome revelations of Amleth’s dead victims as his bold mission of vengeance grew increasingly outrageous. The sternness of these men and the extreme brutality that turns limbs into a macabre sculpture collide hilariously. However, it’s more startling than humorous. The battle between the real and the fantasy, the austere and the ridiculous, the terrible and the beautiful is present throughout The Northman.

The idea of this kind of storytelling is admirable, but Eggers’ execution comes out as empty, capturing the terror but undermining the heart. In the end, the blows don’t land as hard as we had anticipated for them to, despite being intense and brutal.

Is the Northman Good?

We’re delighted we can watch this movie on a widescreen because we enjoyed it. Although we are confident that Robert Eggers can make much better movies, and this one falls just short of being a masterpiece, it’s a fantastic contribution to his career.

Our Northman reviews give you all the information about this movie. But to know the story, you have to watch the movie. It’s finally here. The Northman is now available on Peacock.
