Movie Borrego – Some Flashes of Brilliant Cinematography is the only Silver Lining of this Movie

Those who have read the story could find themselves utterly dismayed on viewing the movie Borrego written and directed by Jesse Harris. The drug trade and desert survival thriller fail to leave any mark on the audience. The audience would not only like to forget the film but even regret spending time discovering their mistake of choosing the wrong film.

Let’s quickly explore what is the movie Borrego about.

The Storyline of the Movie Borrego

The Borrego plot revolves around a young botanist Elly who is studying an invasive plant species and relocates to a desert town. While she moves around the desert, she witnesses a plane crash in which a drug smuggler was traveling. Her encounter with the smuggler is a major turning point in the story as it packs the elements of a thriller into the plot to make it appear more dramatic. The kidnapping of the botanist gives a twist to the story as the kidnappers force her on a dangerous journey to a distant point they choose for drop-off. Finding herself in the most helpless situation, alone in the desert with her captor, the botanist desperately tries to survive. Her steely resolve to free herself forces her to take immense risks to escape from the clutches of the smuggler before things turn deadly.

A Film that goes nowhere

However, the opening does not have even the remotest connection to the story, which disappoints viewers the most. The story of the film doesn’t have the slightest connection to the opening that displays information about the menace of addiction to prescription drugs, mostly related to the smuggling of fentanyl along the USA-Mexico border. The story does not address any of the issues mentioned at the film’s beginning. Moreover, there is no attempt to connect the dots to create a trustworthy narrative with some underlying message. Despite some brilliant cinematography in patches, the film does not have any substance that can make the audience hold their patience to see the entire film. The slow pace of the film and the meandering journey of the botanist and her captor can make the audience wary.

The Cast and Crew

The cast of Borrego includes Lucy Hale as Ellie, the botanist and the protagonist of the film, supported by the drug smuggler Tomas, played by Leynar Gomez. Olivia Trujillo plays the role of Alex, who meets Ellie just before the plane crashes. Strangely, Alex is drawn to the older woman. The local sheriff Jose, played by Nicholas Gonzalez, is Alex’s father and feels overwhelmed by the incidents that follow the plane crash in the desert. Jorge A. Jimenez plays the character of Guillermo, a dangerous man who lives in a trailer. He picks up the drugs that arrive and moves them through the proper distribution channels.

The Borrego ending is a massive disappointment for viewers as Guillermo kills Tomas, although Elly’s escape from her captor’s clutches adds some feel-good factor to an otherwise forgettable movie.

Written and directed by Jesse Harris, people will forget the movie Borrego sooner than expected.
