An In-Depth Review of the Nordictrack Iselect Dumbbells

The NordicTrack iSelect Voice-Activated Dumbbells, despite looking similar to other adjustable dumbbells we’ve tried in the previous year. Just when we thought our gym gear couldn’t be much smarter or more customizable, NordicTrack outdoes itself.

Strength training is an essential component of every fitness program, and the best adjustable dumbbells allow you to push through each set without fumbling with loose-weight plates.

Are there any possible downsides to these high-tech dumbbells? We thought they would be more compatible with the rest of the company’s iFit-connected gear. Despite their price, adjustable dumbbells are an essential item of gym equipment – and their footprint is much more compact than a complete dumbbell set. You can burn calories while increasing your metabolism by using them for high-intensity interval training.

Design and Build

These are the heaviest dumbbells we’ve ever tried. By the way, this isn’t a bad thing. The curved knurl provided an excellent grip with every rep in our testing.

Unlike traditional adjustable dumbbells, which require twisting a knob or handle on the dumbbells to change the weight plates, NordicTrack took a more futuristic approach. On the dumbbells, there are no controls of any kind. Instead, you may increase the weights in 5-pound increments using a handy knob in the center of the storage tray that plugs into the nearest outlet. When you pick up the dumbbells, the inner mechanisms snap into place, leaving the unused weight plates on the storage tray. After all, it’s essentially an automated version of the Select-A-Weight 55 Lb Dumbbell Set.

Setting Up

Because these adjustable dumbbells are from the future, they’ll need some tech-love once you’ve figured out where to put the storage tray. If you have either, we recommend placing it near a full-length mirror and your smart TV.

The accompanying tablet holder must first be attached, which takes only a few seconds. Once you’ve connected the dumbbells to WiFi, you’ll want to link them to an Amazon Alexa-enabled device and your phone or tablet using Bluetooth. The dumbbells are still functional even if you don’t have an Amazon account.

You can tweak WiFi settings, change the name of your new toy, and create movement presets for 15 exercises from the iSelect app; if you click on any activity in the app, you’ll be sent to a short video that demonstrates perfect form via iFit coach.

Performance

The Bowflex SelectTech 552 Dumbbells take a few seconds to replace the weight plates, but the iSelect Dumbbells’ digital dial requires even less time, and it functioned flawlessly in my tests. Everything functioned as described when using the voice-controlled adjustment; we never had any issues with the mechanisms sticking or the apps failing.

After using them for a variety of iFit strength-training courses, as well as some of our casual exercises that didn’t require a coach, we can confidently claim that the iSelect Voice-Controlled Dumbbells are our new favorites in terms of adjustable dumbbells.

The load plates match snugly collectively while in use, and the curved metallic knurl feels remarkable in hand; each dumbbell becomes easy to grasp during our workout. The plastic grips on NordicTrack’s Select-a-Weight dumbbells, on the other hand, became slightly slippery if our hands became too sweaty, and we never felt confidence raising them over our heads as a result. These dumbbells aren’t made for powerlifters, especially since dumping them on the ground isn’t recommended.

iFIT

dumbbell

Although the iSelect app is quite basic, having an iFit membership boosts the worth of these dumbbells tenfold. NordicTrack and iFit have been collaborating for a long time, and this unique personal training environment is becoming increasingly popular month after month.

Your iFit membership gives you access to dozens of world-class personal trainers via your smart TV, smartphone, or any iFit-compatible piece of gym equipment.

We had a great time watching these sessions on my iPad mini, but we had an even better time firing up the same workouts on our Amazon Fire TV; strength-training workouts can be filtered by intensity, length, environment, or trainer.

NordicTrack’s $599 Select-A-Weight 55 Lb. Treadmill received high marks from us. The iSelect Voice-Controlled Dumbbells are the next big thing in fitness innovation, and we’re always on the watch for it.

The Core Home Fitness Adjustable Dumbbell Set, which costs the same $399, has similar capabilities, but if you add the $170 stand, all three models are nearly the same price.

After all, this is high-end equipment with a high price tag, and some may consider voice activation a frill when it comes to pumping iron. However, we value every second of our workout, and if these rock-solid dumbbells save us just five minutes each week, they’re already worth it.
