You’ve probably had an anxiety dream where you’re sitting for an exam in a subject for which you haven’t read anything. It feels like a veil of darkness is gathering over a portion of your brain, even though you believe you are familiar with the lesson according to dream logic.
Interestingly, it is the same place where the inspiration for the Netflix Show Shadow and Bone originates that has been covered with a layer of darkness. The show, announced on January 10, 2019, was created and written by Eric Heisserer.

Shadow and Bone TV Series: Plot and Spoilers
The first novel in the Shadow and Bone series, where Alina discovers her ability and learns she is a Grisha — someone born with magic — will serve as the show’s main point of focus, according to the synopsis has been made public. As the Darkling, the Grisha commander whisks her away to learn about other Grisha, he hopes she will use her strength to split Ravka in two by destroying the shadow fold.
For the complex world-building, Wendy Partridge’s stunning costumes, a few entertaining performances, and the security of its dependable YA plotting, you may watch the first season. Although you don’t have to learn everything immediately or that it all makes sense in the end, you should still be wary.
Beyond the surface, however, Shadow and Bone falls short of matching Game of Thrones’ charm and emotional resonance. Shadow and Bone repeatedly impose melodrama and unwarranted story beats. The bad writing undermines the efforts of its superb actors while the worldbuilding, character development, and narrative careen from one-liner to one-liner with little to no substance in between.
The themes of Leigh Bardugo’s book Shadow and the Bone are good vs. evil, love and friendship, and taking charge of one’s destiny. As the Darkling plots to subjugate the entire globe to his rule, the land of the Unsea and the Darkling stand-in for evil in the book.
