Asus Vivobook Flip 14 Tm420 Review – An Ideal Flip Screen Notebook for Doodling

For those who are used to the premium Ultrabooks and MacBooks, the  Vivo line of budget-friendly notebooks, especially the ASUS laptops, will not be impressive. Generally, the Vivo notebooks have been averaging in display and looks, and many do not have great specs. However, the Vivobook Flip 14 TM420 has managed to impress.

ASUS VivoBook Flip 14 TM420 Review – Specifications

The hardware is a significant improvement. Instead of the low-powered Intel chip and the UHD graphics, this notebook has a Radeon 5500U chip with Vega graphics. It is good enough to indulge in some gaming on the side after a hard day of professional work.

The design is also greatly enhanced from the other Vivobook models a couple of years back. The laptop has an expensive look and feels good in an all-black finish. The only flaw for this otherwise smart device is the green fluorescent “enter” key that sours the overall great aesthetic looks.

The VivoBook Flip 14 TM420 laptop comes with a 45W tiny powerful charger, a stylus, an optional leather sleeve, and in some places, an optical mouse.

Design & Construction

The material used is plastic, mainly considering the budgeted pricing with ASUS VivoBook Flip 14 TM420 price in a sub $700 range. A metal lid cover makes it challenging in combination with a screen cover made of glass. One, however, needs to be not too aggressive with the notebook as their high chances of breaking. In terms of dimensions, this notebook is 18.2mm in height and weighs around 1.50 kilograms, making it not the lightest or thinnest but still making it feel more solid than it is.

The touchpad has a glass surface that makes it smooth for tracking, though it is not the biggest or the best. There is an embedded fingerprint reader in the top right corner. However, the area above and below the touchpad does not detect the sensor input.

TheVivoBook Flip 14 TM420 has only two speaker grills, with the hot air exhausting from the left side while the keyboard draws in the cool air. The lifted backside, therefore, has no use except for the ergonomics.

The is a USB Type-A 2.0 port on the lift side, and on the right side is the charging brick, a USB Type-C 3.2 (Gen. 2) and USB Type-A 3.2 (Gen. 2) port, an HDMI connector, a MicroSD card reader, an audio jack and the power button.

Display

The ASUS VivoBook Flip 14 TM420 has a Full HD IPS touchscreen display.  The monitor size is 14″ diagonal and has a resolution of 1920 х 1080—the pixel density of 157 PPI and screen ratio aspect of 16:9 ticks of all the right boxes. The screen can be looked upon as Retina when viewed from 56 cm. Even the contrast ratio is acceptable at 990:1

Conclusion

TheVivoBook Flip 14 TM420 touchscreen panel allows for comfortable angles for viewing, a reasonable contrast ratio, and no aggressive brightness. However, the color reproduction is mediocre, with only 51 % Srgb coverage.
