Apple’s iMac 2021 (24-inch) offers a seamless display, a fine webcam, and a range of new features that breathe new life into its aging line of iMacs. In this time, when we have spent much of the last year at home with family and friends, chatting online endlessly, these virtues have never been more important. While the M1 chip in the new iMac may seem like its biggest selling point, we were more impressed by the quality of its display, speakers, and camera quality after testing it for the iMac 2021 review.
Moreover, the new iMac does not disappoint when it comes to performance. Apple’s M1 chip is the first to appear in an iMac, a custom bit of silicon that’s already been shown to be powerful and efficient in the Mac mini with M1, the MacBook Air with M1, and the MacBook Pro. Although the iMac hasn’t converted into a high-performance gaming machine, in our experience, it can handle whatever tasks a student or family might throw at it, making it one of the best all-in-one computers that you can buy right now as well as one of the best computers period.
Design And Display
This new 24-inch iMac has been completely redesigned and has received several new coats of paint. Aside from the familiar silver aluminum, there are now seven new colors to choose from, reminiscent of the colorful G3 heyday. A smaller version of the Apple logo appears on the back of the device, replacing the smaller logo on the lower lip. This device does not allow for adjusting the height of the display, which is a missed opportunity. If you want to mount the iMac on a wall or monitor arm, you can buy it with a built-in VESA mount adapter instead of a stand on Apple’s website.
The 24-inch iMac display features a resolution of 4480 x 2520 and a pixel density of 218 pixels per inch while supporting P3 color space and TrueTone technology. Images and videos on this display have excellent quality. We easily picked out details, even in fast-moving or dark scenes, while streaming 4K video and trailers.
Apple’s new 24-inch iMac has pretty much all of its ports located on its back – specifically, in the bottom right corner. iMac’s display is 0.45 inches thick, making it thinner than the 0.55-inch depth of a standard headphone jack, so the headphone jack has been relocated from the front to the lower-left corner of the display. A 24-inch iMac comes with just two Thunderbolt 4 ports and a pretty minimal headphone jack. A higher-end iMac features 3 Thunderbolt 4 ports and 2 USB 3 ports on the back of the display, and a headphone jack on the left side. In addition, the power adapter has a Gigabit Ethernet port.
Audio And Webcam
The iMac 24 inch comes with six speakers, including two sets of low-frequency woofers and one set of high-frequency tweeters and support for Dolby Atmos. The sound quality is superb in all media, including music, movies, and games.
Video calls will be crystal clear with the new iMac’s 1080p webcam. Now that many people work remotely more than ever, this is especially welcome. According to Apple, this results from the inclusion of the M1 chip, which has an advanced image signal processor that helps deliver better image quality by reducing noise, adjusting exposure, and white balancing automatically, among other things. With Zoom’s high-quality video calls, you’ll be able to see everything clearly.
Performance, Graphics & Games
We were blown away by the performance of Apple’s 24-inch iMac after a week of testing it to its limits using Apple’s M1 chip. Multitasking is quick and easy with plenty of power.
This new 24-inch iMac isn’t built for game performance like most Macs. The iMac struggles to run the latest 3D games even with the M1 and 16GB of RAM. The 4.5K display is ideal for less demanding games.
Software and iOS Apps
Apple’s 24″ iMac runs iOS apps natively thanks to its M1 chip available in the App Store. The new iMac works with every popular app we tried; not every app on macOS is guaranteed to work. With the macOS 11.3 unit we reviewed, we had no trouble installing and running iOS apps such as Twitter and Fantastical. The 24-inch 4.5K Apple Arcade screen looks phenomenal and runs well with Apple Arcade games.
Keyboard and Mouse
A Magic Keyboard and Magic Mouse are included with Apple’s new 24-inch iMac. The mouse can be exchanged for a Magic Touchpad for an additional $50. If you expect multiple users to use the device, the TouchID sensor on the right side of the keyboard simplifies login. It is well-designed, but the Magic Keyboard and Magic Mouse are too small. Using the Magic Trackpad is much more comfortable than using a regular trackpad. Keyboards, mice, and touchpads are all lightweight and durable.
Our only complaint about the Magic Keyboard and Mouse is that it is excruciatingly small. We consider the lack of vertical height adjustment to be a personal attack on tall people. The new 24-inch iMac even made us enjoy our time with it. You can watch movies or play games on the screen, and the speakers make the experience sound great. Even the mid-level model with the fully equipped M1 chip and all color options can cost at least $1,499, which is quite a bit. You can get a great all-in-one machine from Apple for that price if you’re willing to spend that much.
