Nvidia RTX 3090 Ti or AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT  – Who Has the Edge?

Nvidia and AMD are two big players in the world of GPU. While AMD released the latest graphic card in December 2021, Nvidia unveiled its latest item in CES 2022.

Here we will compare the two cards’ specifications to see which one is better at the hardware level.

The AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT is built on the RDNA architecture, which the company also uses for its  RX 6800 and 6800XT graphic cards. The Nvidia RTX 3090 Ti is built on the Nvidia Ampere architecture using the 8nm manufacturing process that allows more transistors. This results in better process efficiency and performance per watt than any other tracing card.

The AMD lacks in certain areas as it uses the GDRR6 VRAM   instead of the latest and more expensive GDRR6X found in the Nvidia card. When comparing the specifications between   AMD and Nvidia, it is essential to mention that AMD 6900 XT does not have the tensor core as it has customized technology, unlike the Nvidia for powering DLSS tech. The objective of DLSS is to improve gaming performance as it allows the GPU to predict which frames are coming up and accordingly scale up the event. AMD does not have its own technology to compete with Nvidia but may launch sometime next year.

Availability and Price – RTX 3090 vs. RX 6900 XT

The AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT was released last year and is presently available on Amazon for $1259. The current supply issues of chips have made it difficult to understand what price one can get a graphic card for. If they are out of stock, what will the variation price be?

Since  Nvidia RTX 3090 Ti was announced only in January 2022, the company has not yet declared the MSRP; the expected cost can be around $ 2500 considering the shortage of chip supplies and TX 3090 Ti being an upgrade on the 3090 model, which is priced around $1500 and fluctuating.

Performance – AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT vs. RTX 3090

The performance of Nvidia RTX 3090 Ti is not yet known but based on the information provided by the company, the memory speed has increased 21 Gbps while AMD Radeon RX 6900 speed is 18 Gbps. It appears that the actual performance of NVidia will have a 9% jump resulting in it being a lot faster. This performance between the two GPU can be compared after the Nvidia product is available, tested, and compared with AMD.

Early Verdict

Though it may not be accurate at this stage pending the Nvidia RTX 3090 Ti release, based on the statistics of the graphic cards available, it appears that Nvidia has the edge over AMD. The upgrade of Nvidia to GDDR6X VRAM and DLSS technology inclusion means better memory speed and gaming performance which AMD would require on its own if it has to stand out among the competition.

On the other hand,  AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT GPU  is still a capable graphics card that provides excellent 4K performance.
