Comic-Con Convention: An Overview
The San Diego Comic-Con International is a convention for fans of science fiction, fantasy, and pop culture in general. It was first held in 1970 at the U.S Grant Hotel in downtown San Diego. The convention has been almost every year since then except for once when it was canceled because of a lack of funding. The event has grown exponentially over the years to include not only comic books but also movies, television shows, gaming, and technology. The event attracts upwards of 125k individuals or more every year. Comic-Con International: San Diego, a multi-genre entertainment & comic convention that is held annually in San Diego, California. The name is also used to refer to the organization that runs the event; Comic-Con International (CCI). It was founded as the Golden State Comic Book Convention in the year 1970 by a group of San Diegans that included Richard Alf, Shel Dorf, Ken Krueger, Barry Alfonso, Mike Towry, Bob Sourk, & Greg Bear.
The San Diego Comic-Con is one of the biggest events in the world. It’s known as a place where nerds and geeks come to indulge themselves in comics, gaming, sci-fi, and other nerdy stuff. But there is more than meets the eye as this event attracts celebrities from all over the world as well as movie studios and production companies who use it as a platform for big announcements and product launches. From cosplay to comics, the San Diego Comic-Con is a celebration of all things nerdy. With its high level of participation from fans, comic book publishers are able to connect with consumers in an intimate setting that’s not possible through other media. For aspiring comic book writers and illustrators, it’s also an opportunity to network with professionals who can help launch their careers.
Comic-Con isn’t just for comic book nerds. It’s also a hot spot for Hollywood studios to bring their upcoming properties to life in front of fans’ eyes, and it is where the action movie trend started. Action movies are big business, but they are hard to make. Action movies live or die on the stunts that are needed to portray the action realistically. Some of the biggest stars from film and television can be found at Comic-Con, showing up for panel discussions or just stopping by booths to sign autographs. Because it’s not just about comic books anymore, the term “nerd” no longer applies here.
Comic-Con International is a four-day convention held annually in San Diego, California. Comic-Con is upon us once again. It’s a time of year when those of us who love comics and graphic novels get to share our passion with the rest of the world, as well as meet some of our favorite artists in person. For many people, this event is also synonymous with Hollywood, because it’s known for being one of the biggest platforms for movie studios to release new footage from upcoming movies or TV shows. However, this year in 2021, the arrangement of the Comic-Con Convention is slightly different from other years. Due to the social distancing norms, levied by the government for preventing COVID-19, since 2019, Comic-Con did not hold any events. But after 2 years, San Diego Comic-Con is going to hold its first event [in-person] since 2019. In 2021, San Diego Comic-Con convention will take place from 26 to 28th November.
For past decades, it has been observed that the Comic-Con event has become more about Hollywood and less about comics. At the San Diego Comic-Con, fans get to be part of a huge movie extravaganza. There are panels where stars from upcoming blockbusters talk about their roles and interact with their adoring public. The convention is also a chance for fans to meet the actors from their favorite TV shows, among them Doctor Who and Sherlock Holmes. Hollywood has brought out the big guns for every year’s Comic-Con. Several Hollywood-related activities took more place in Comic-Con like the announcement of the casts of Marvel Movie Marvel’s ‘Doctor Strange’ and DC Comics’ ‘Suicide Squad,’. In addition, guests’ appearance of the main casts the event. All these Hollywood-related activities were increased in Comic-Con.
But this year, due to the COVID-19 restrictions and guidelines, and health concerns, San Diego Comic-Con has limited their programs arrangements in the event along with the allowance of the number of people in the event. The schedule for the full San Diego Comic-Con event program has been released and it has been noticed that there is barely any presence of TV shows or major movies. The main focus of the programs will be on fan discussion, cosplay, tabletop games along with limited celebrity appearance. For instance, Star Trek’s Brent Spiner and Avatar and Hook’s Dante Basco. These celebrities will mainly promote their personal work and podcasts but not any major shows. Additionally, the biggest official panel which will be held, for which the audiences have been waiting for long, will be conducted virtually. Also, Comic-Con 2021 is not including panels and instead of that, the event is including space for attendee registration.
As per the statement provided by the official Comic-Con site, ‘the primary reason for holding this event this year is to enable individuals to gather as a community which they have not been able to do for a long time due to the COVID-19 restrictions and guidelines and health concerns. Limiting the number of days for the event, decrement in attendance, and decisively smaller in scope, all these have a special motive. It means a more intimate gathering for the event while still arousing the fun community feeling for which Comic-Con conventions are known, such as great programs, exhibits, cosplay, and gaming among many others. Just because there is less presence of Hollywood in the event, does not mean it does not have that funny essence in it. The Comic-Con Special Edition is the main attraction of Comin Con 2021.
